With the arrival of many new medications for the treatment of Croh's disease and ulcerative colitis, it has become essential to compare these different therapeutic options in order to improve patient care. Randomized clinical trials provide the highest level of evidence, but they do not always reflect routine clinical practice.
Treatment persistence (the length of time between the initiation and discontinuation of a therapy) is a simple measure that generally reflects a drug’s long-term effectiveness, safety, and tolerability. As a result, it is increasingly being used to compare different therapeutic strategies in real-world settings.
To date, no large-scale nationwide analysis has been conducted in Belgium. Having access to such data is important for developing consistent, evidence-based treatment strategies for all patients with ulcerative colitis across Belgium.
