Application

Each year, BIRD awards up to three original (basic or clinical) research projects related to inflammatory bowel diseases with a BIRD grant of 6000 Euros each.

A first part of 2000 Euros will be awarded after acceptation, a second after presentation during an (inter)national gastroenterology congress and a third one after full publication.
 
The research project can be submitted by one or two people of the same Belgian institution.

Applicants should apply for BIRD membership and be younger than 40 at the submission deadline.

Candidates who previously applied but did not receive the grant can apply again.

The application for the BIRD grant should be in the following format:

  1. One page CV of the applicant
  2. Summary of previous research of the applicant
  3. Research project in maximum 3 pages A4, Arial Narrow, simple interline, with the following sections (+ 1 extra-page of references if needed):
    • Background of the current research project
    • Research hypothesis AND objectives
    • Methodology/strategy and limitations
    • Research environment
    • Perspectives and added value for the IBD patients

The deadline for the application of the BIRD grant is 15th March 2023.

Each application will be evaluated by up to 5 Belgian and/or 1 foreign reviewer, on the following criteria (each scored from 1 to 10).

  • Interest of the study
  • Originality of the study
  • Writing and presentation
  • Feasibility of the study
  • Overall evaluation of the project

 

The selected BIRD grants will be announced at the next BIRD General Assembly.

The first part of the grant will be awarded thanks to a legacy received through the King Boudewijn foundation.
